An Excerpt from Blackout Girl

I remember taking my first drink at around six- or seven-years-old. My parents would have these little gatherings at the house and invite all their friends. I was not supposed to be out of my bedroom but I would sometimes come downstairs in my little pajamas and walk around.

At the time my mother was always drinking these light green drinks in small glasses. I loved the color of the drink; it was the same color of my bedroom walls and the little plastic lights that I had on my nightstand.

I was drawn to the color and, when no one was looking, I picked up the glass and took a little taste. It tasted like mint and immediately my tongue woke up from the tingly sensation of the sweet and slightly bitter taste of the alcohol inside the glass.

I loved it immediately and took a bigger sip quickly before setting it down as fast as I could and running back upstairs. I got a little head rush-like feeling as I landed on my bed; it was very subtle but mixed with the adrenaline of being downstairs and doing something I shouldn’t have been doing it was exhilarating. After that, my favorite ice cream became mint chocolate chip.

Coincidence? I think not!
