Book Review by Suzanne K of “Leave the Light On: A Memoir of Recovery and Self-Discovery” by Jennifer Storm.
This is the second memoir by Jennifer Storm. Her first, Blackout Girl: Growing Up and Drying Out in America, depicted her haunting descent into addiction which occurred after she had been raped at age twelve. In Leave the Light On: A Memoir of Recovery and Self-Discovery, Storm picks up where the first book left off. Even without reading her first memoir, readers will be captivated by Storm’s account of life in recovery.
Anyone who’s been through treatment for addiction knows that recovery is a scary time. You worry about it when you’re nearing the end of your treatment, and you worry constantly about it during the early days of your recovery. This happens regardless of what your drug or addictive behavior of choice is, how long you’ve been addicted before you seek and go through treatment, whether you’ve relapsed once or several times since treatment, who you are, where you live, how much money you have, how old you are, your sex, religious, political or any other type of affiliation. In short, recovery takes some getting used to.

Las Vegas-based Central Recovery Press publishes books with a very tight focus. As their name implies, all of CRP’s titles deal with issues of addiction and recovery. While this might seem an almost impossibly esoteric publishing mandate, CRP’s narrow focus ensures that the message they send to the world is measured and deliberate. “Central Recovery Press is committed to offering exceptional published material for addiction treatment and recovery.” And that’s just what they do.
Considering the topics CRP deals with, it seems possible to me that some of these books have saved lives. Take, for instance, a very recent CRP release, Leave the Light On by Jennifer Storm who is also the executive director of a Pennsylvania-based victim/witness assistance program.
Storm shoots straight from the hip and some of what she shares here is heart-breaking. Storm’s drop into addiction was covered in her 2008 memoir, Blackout Girl: Growing Up and Drying Out. In this new book, we get to see the light with her: but there are some painful passages here to go through, first, including not only her recovery, but her coming out.
Those dealing with similar challenges are likely to find strength and light here. Those who are not will find the tone evangelical, at best. That’s okay, somehow though. It seems to me to be worth knowing that, for recovery reading, I don’t think anyone is doing it better than CRP.

The new movie Observe and Report comes off in commercials like any other funny pushing the limit Seth Rogen film. I’ve seen many of his films and while yes they push the limits-they have never gone this far. Apparently in the middle of this movie the filmmaker’s crash about as far over a line as one can go. A scene in the film depicts a date between Rogan’s character and Anna Farris’s character. A portion of the date is shown in the previews on TV-showing Anna Farris’s character tanking back shots and later puking at which point Rogen kisses her with puke on her face. As if that weren’t gross enough, forward to the next scene where Rogen’s character is having aggressive sex with Farris while her eyes are closed, her body is limp and she has vomit seeping out her mouth onto the pillow next to her. He stops and screams “I’m sorry” at which point she slurs a quick acknowledgment of what is happening at which point he resumes raping her. This is all done to elicit a laugh from an audience of what is sure to be in the millions given Rogen’s vast fame.As a rape survivor whose victimization occurred while blacked out-I find this movie to be repugnant and damaging. April is National Sexual Assault Month and should be reserved for creating awareness of this horrific plague on our community. Please do not see this film as it makes an utter mockery of rape.
I cannot even begin to understand the cultural damage this is going to do to further harm women in our society. 1 in 6 women become victims of sexual assault in this country. The reality is that many females will be walking into the theaters over the next couple days with no knowledge that this scene is in this movie as it has not shown up in the commercials. This could trigger devastating PTSD affects and will cause a re-victimization for so many.
Check out this review before wasting your money.

Well, today is the day. I sign the contract on my second memoir to be released in Feb of 2010! Everytime I think about it, I just shake my head. I cannot believe that I am actually going to have a second publication out there. I am so proud and thrilled. The book is tenatively titled, Leave the Light On, I hope it holds that title as it is a favorite of mine. However, you just never know what the marketing folks at a publisher will do. I will keep you updated as things progress and share all the excitement with you, like the book cover, the launch, the crazy book tour information that is sure to follow! It’s only been a little over a year since the first release and I think I am just beginning. I have so many more ideas. Writing is a huge part of my life now. More to come…

Love Junkie
By Rachel Resnick
This brutally honest account of Resnick’s personal compulsion toward sex to fill the void of her horrific childhood is a must read for anyone who seeks to understand love and sex obsession. Resnick details is vivid prose her dysfunctional childhood wrought with abandonment, sexual confusion, her mothers alcoholism and neglect. It is a miracle she made it without turning to alcoholism herself. Her escape of choice was men and loveless abusive relationships instead. She confused sex with love and love with attention. She spent the majority of her adult life looking for love in every sexual encounter and male glance she received until one day she realized that the only place true love can be found is from within. Resnick seeks help in a local support group for those like her and finds solace and personal freedom. She sheds a bright light on a very dark subject.
This title was recently released and can be found at all book retailers and online at amazon.com. www.rachelresnick.com for more information about the author and her work.

September is National Recovery Month, a time set aside to honor and celebrate those in this world who have made the journey into recovery. It is also a time to create a much larger and needed dialogue in our society about addiction and recovery.Having an active addict in your life is probably one of the most excruciatingly painful experiences a person can have. The word powerless cannot even begin to capture the utter devastation, hopelessness and futility one can feel while being in the presence of an active addict. It is gut-wrenching and heart-breaking to watch someone you care about make all the wrong decisions.

Here is a sneak at my new article in Mystic Pop Magazine….
“Secrets Will Keep You Sick”
“Your secrets will keep you sick” was one of the mottos I heard during my stay in a rehabilitation center for drug and alcohol addiction. It was a statement that I had never really considered before then. After all, I thought my secrets kept me safe: safe from reality and safe from the pain and the scrutiny that would be sure to follow if the people in my life really knew the things I felt, thought, and had done. I spent my entire preteens, teens, and early twenties hiding my scars from the world and from myself.
As a child I quickly learned that in my house we didn’t speak of tough issues like abuse, drugs, or death. I was taught to keep those things hidden and just act as if everything was okay. After all, this is what suburban families often did: We smiled for the camera at Christmastime and sent off our “American dream” card to our neighbors, families, and friends; yet in reality, behind closed doors, the smiles were rarely seen and all hell was breaking loose!
