Sorry I couldn’t resist…I am like a 1/3 Irish so I had to represent. I just got back from the Writers at the Beach Conference in Rehoboth Delaware. I don’t think I can even find words that can express how energizing, wonderful, educational, inspiring and rejuvenating this whole trip was…oh hey look, I just found some words! It was all that a bag of green colored chips.
I met some amazing authors who have multiple books, been on Oprah, have sold their film rights etc. and gleamed so much energy and advice from them. It was incredible. To name a few that I read with Carolyn Parkhurst who wrote The Dogs of Babel and most recently Lost and Found. Also Sheri Reynolds who has one of the best southern accents I have ever heard who wrote, The Rapture of Canaan an Oprah book club selection and Marisa de los Santos who wrote Love Walked In. Finally I got to meet Jacquelyn Mitchard who penned The Deep End of the Ocean which was then turned into the movie with Michelle Pieffer; yes another Oprah book club selection. See a theme here… She was a lovely humor filled person who really brought some great guidance to the conference as the keynote speaker.
So I was the thorn between all of these roses and I had the honor and privilege of reading with them and signing my little ole book next to them. Thanks all to Maribeth Fischer an amazingly strong woman who organizes this conference each year and thought my new little memoir deserved prominent placement. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
As if this were enough reason to say this weekend was a huge success, the whole conference was a charity benefit for Maribeth’s once ailing and unfortunately now deceased nephews who were diagnoses with Mitochondria Disease, a very rare genetic disease that is usually fatal. Each other gave of our time freely and hopefully we raised some good money for this cause. Go to http://www.writersatthebeach.com/ to learn more of this amazing annual event.
I came home with a whole new appreciation and love of writing and have been hammering away on the keyboard…psst….I am well into my next memoir!!!
